Discussion Questions

The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.

  1. When does it make sense to seek a funding source other than the school district?

When the family prefers to own the AT device or the student will be leaving school within the next year or two, it makes sense to seek funding from a source other than the school district so that the device can go with the student.

Lisa is graduating from Alexandria High School in two months.  Throughout her high school career, she has used a reading/writing software program known as Kurzweil.  This software was installed on all of the school's computers. Discuss the various options for funding a laptop and Kurzweil software for Lisa's use in college and potential steps in the process.

Answers will vary but may include a discussion of the following funding sources and processes:

    • Vocational Rehabilitation
    • Philanthropic organizations
    • Crowdsourcing/Crowdfunding websites/organizations
    • Grants/scholarships
  2. Discuss the pros and cons of using the school district as the funding source for a student's communication device.

    Examples include:

    • if the school purchases the AAC device, it is the school's property and may not transition with the student when environments change
    • if the school purchases the AAC device, the family's private insurance benefits can be saved for a time when educational funding is not available
    • the school is required to provide access to FAPE, not the newest, greatest technology available; therefore, privately funded equipment may have more bells and whistles than what the school is required to provide
  3. Discuss using crowdsourcing or crowdfunding websites/organizations to fund assistive technology requests.

Answers will vary but may include:

Crowdsourcing is growing in popularity and has potential as a funding source for AT. These websites may offer funding for a vendor seeking to develop a device or start a new company, a teacher seeking classroom AT, or a family looking for funding of a particular AT device. If pursuing this avenue to get money to purchase a device, be careful to work with a reputable source.

    Websites/organizations include: DonorsChoose, GoFundMeAdoptAClassroom.

Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.

Introductory Activities

  1. What are your options?

Download and read What Are Your Options to Pay for Assistive Devices?  from www.abledata.com. Follow up on two or more recommended sources.

  2. Funding AT through Medicaid

Review Funding Assistive Technology Through State Medicaid Programs (Sheldon et al., 2008).  Provide a summary of what you learned from the article.

  3. Loans and AT

Many states have loan programs for AT. These programs provide low-interest loans with long repayment schedules for qualifying individuals. Go to the Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs website and look up your state in the list of state programs. Search the website to find out about available funding and write a short report.

Advanced Activities

  1. ACC Report Coach

Go to AACFundingHelp.com. Choose AAC Report Coach. Download the form and fill it out with a specific student in mind. Review it and decide if it covered all of the information that you think should be included.  If not, think about what you might want to add.

  2. Grant Funding

Go to the iTaalk Autism Foundation.  Under "Projects and Resources" tab, review the grant list for funding therapies, equipment, and services not covered by insurance. Tuesday Treasures are funding sources specific to each state. Determine a grant that is appropriate for the needs of one of your students.  Write a letter of inquiry to one of the organizations listed on the website asking about eligibility requirements, deadlines, and types of equipment funded.
