Discussion Questions

The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.

  1. How might the development of autonomous vehicles benefit passengers with disabilities? What are some considerations that should be taken into account in developing accessible autonomous vehicles?

    Common Answers:

    • The development of autonomous vehicles would allow a person to travel independently. These vehicles do not require the passenger to drive the vehicle, and therefore could be used by individuals who are unable to drive independently.
    • Development of autonomous vehicles should consider factors, such as:
      • How will someone with a mobility impairment enter/exit the vehicle?
      • How will the passenger be secured in the vehicle?
      • If a passenger uses a mobility assistance device, how will that be secured in the vehicle?
      • How will the passenger choose where to go in the vehicle?
      • How will a passenger with visual impairments know when they have reached their destination?
  2. What factors should be considered when starting to drive and looking to work with a driver rehabilitation specialist? What types of disabilities may be inappropriate to learn to drive?

    Common Factors:

    • What is the individual’s level of interest in driving? How independent are they in other areas of life? What is the cost of a driving evaluation and training, and will insurance cover this expense?
    • The following is not an all-inclusive list, but some disabilities that may limit driving ability include: vision impairments that do not meet state vision standards, moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, presence of the startle reflex, uncontrolled mental health issues, and severe anxiety.
  3. Discuss some of the resources for funding driver training and vehicle modifications. What avenues might someone take to become connected with funding resources?

    Examples:

    • Vocational Rehabilitation: Driving training and vehicle modifications may be funded for someone who needs to drive to get to work or maintain a job. An interested candidate can contact their state bureau of vocational rehabilitation.
    • Automobile Rebate Programs: Drivers who have purchased a vehicle to be modified may be eligible for a rebate from the vehicle manufacturer. A driver would need to contact their vehicle manufacturer to determine specific eligibility.
    • National Organization for Vehicle Accessibility (NOVA): Provides grants which support partial costs of vehicle modifications. Interested applicants would need to submit an application for the NOVA grant.

Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.

Introductory Activities

  1. Safe Driving

Consider one of your own clients or family members who may not be safe to drive independently.

    • What physical, cognitive, or visual difficulties may impact his/her driving performance?
    • Would he/she benefit from a driving evaluation with a driver rehabilitation specialist?
    • Think about the pros and cons of beginning to use alternative transportation within his/her community.
  2. Plan a Trip

Choose an international destination you would like to visit and plan an accessible trip.

    • Research accommodations for travelers with disabilities
      • What are some examples of assistance that can be provided in an airport? How about on the airplane itself?
      • When would you need to contact your airline to request accommodations?
      • How would you request a TSA Passenger Support Specialist?
      • How would you report an issue with travel to the US Department of Transportation?
    • Research your travel destination with the U.S. Department of State by searching for the country you plan to visit.
      • In the Local Laws & Special Circumstances section for your destination country, what information is available related to traveling with a disability?

Advanced Activities

  1. Create a Transportation Plan

    • Use the Internet, phone book, and other resources to research private and public transportation options within your community.
    • Contact several companies to obtain information on cost and hours of service.
    • Consider what transportation options may be difficult to use if you have a memory impairment.
    • Create a transportation plan for a client with a physical disability.
    • Try out the transportation plan and use it for yourself.
  2. Hand Controls

A person who recently obtained a spinal cord injury, wants to get licensed with hand controls and a new van. What steps should they take?

    • Go to ADED.net and call a local CDRS to determine if they can evaluate and train a client with hand controls who has a spinal cord injury
    • Contact a local NMEDA dealer and get a quote on how much hand controls and a knob costs.
    • Call your local state vocational rehabilitation and see if they assist with funding for vehicle modifications and if not, find another funding resource that you may qualify for.
