Reflection Questions

The Reflection Questions document can be downloaded at any time and used in a variety of ways. You can view it before starting your work so that you know which questions will be asked in the videos and/or on the webpages. You can also access it at the end of your work so that you can see all your responses to the questions. This tool can be helpful for documenting your learning and referring to later or for sharing it with others in group discussions or as demonstration of your online progress.

Discussion Questions

The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.

  1. How is your school currently handling AT assessment and implementation? Has this been successful or are you seeking to improve your process?

Answers will vary but may include a discussion of the following:

    • Persons responsible for AT assessment in your district (e.g., a team, individual, or the IEP team)
    • Current and needed district policies and procedures to support the AT consideration and assessment process
    • Implementation plans developed and available to all team members responsible for implementation
    • Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the district's AT assessment and implementation processes
  2. A fourth-grade student with cerebral palsy is struggling with handwriting tasks. How might you or your team address these needs?

During the IEP meeting as team members consider the student's AT needs, they  may discover that the OT is able to address the AT needs for writing or that they do not have anyone on the team with sufficient knowledge of AT and, therefore, decide to make a referral for an AT assessment. The case manager follows up with the WATI Referral/Question Identification Guide, thereby initiating the evaluation process. If the school does not have staff designated to assist with AT assessment, the case manager may contact and/or contract with an outside AT consultant. Staff assigned to AT assessment would then proceed with information gathering using the WATI Student Information Guide distributed to team members working with the student. A team meeting would be scheduled and guided by the WATI AT Decision-Making Guide.

  3. What are some environmental considerations that should be addressed when considering mobile device access for a student?

    • Where will the device be used (classroom, home or other)?
    • What type of workstation is available to the student?
    • What technical support is available at school or home?
    • Who will maintain the device (updating, charging, loading apps)?
    • Is WiFi needed and/or available?
    • What level of durability is needed for the environment?
    • Will the student have a designated device or will the device be shared among several students?

Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.

Introductory Activities

  1. Students and Mobile Devices

Consider your own case example of a student using a mobile device.

    • What are your student's abilities and difficulties?
    • How might the environment indicate the need for a mobile device versus a computer?
    • What tasks might indicate the use of a mobile device rather than a computer?
  2. AT Assessment Process

Download and review the supporting documents and links included in this module.  Create folders for the documents for easy access during the AT assessment process.

  3. Benefits of Mobile Devices

Read the articles linked throughout the module to further your understanding of mobile devices and their benefits as an assistive technology tool.

Advanced Activities

  1. Information Gathering

    1. Select a student to assess for mobile device access using the WATI assessment process.
    2. Complete the WATI Referral/Question Identification Guide.
    3. Select information-gathering forms pertinent to your student.
    4. Circulate forms among team members.
  2. Team Meeting

    1. Schedule a team meeting.
    2. Facilitate the meeting using the WATI AT Decision-Making Guide for Mobile Device Access.
    3. Proceed to the module "Mobile Device Access - WATI - Part II." Do this prior to your team meeting to study the remaining components of the WATI AT Decision-Making Guide. Then hold the team meeting and complete the process with tool selection, implementation, and follow-up plan.
    4. Using the WATI AT Trial Use Guide, collect data and report back at follow-up meeting.
