Reflection Questions

The Reflection Questions document can be downloaded at any time and used in a variety of ways. You can view it before starting your work so that you know which questions will be asked in the videos and/or on the webpages. You can also access it at the end of your work so that you can see all your responses to the questions. This tool can be helpful for documenting your learning and referring to later or for sharing it with others in group discussions or as demonstration of your online progress.

Discussion Questions

The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.

  1. Why is it important to involve direct service providers in the AT assessment?

Knowledge about the characteristics of the environments and the nature of the tasks the student needs to be able to do is a critical component of the decision-making. In addition, in order to be comfortable with making changes in their own practices, teachers and therapists need to be participants in the decision-making that causes those changes.

  2. Why does the WATI AT assessment process help teams complete an AT assessment?

The WATI forms and process provide critically needed guidance. Few service providers are trained in group processes and, as a result, often struggle with it. Having a clear "recipe" helps the team to complete all of the necessary steps and arrive at a decision that is reasonably designed to benefit the student.

  3. What is the most important component of the WATI AT assessment process?

No one component is more important than the others. The process was developed in response to school teams stating that they we not able to complete AT assessments because they did not know what questions to ask. Those questions were then identified and incorporated into a process that helps move the team through important steps.

Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.

Introductory Activities

  1. The JHU AT Cycle

Read about the JHU AT Cycle process. How does it compare / contrast to the WATI AT assessment process?

  2. The QIAT

Read the Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology (QIAT) for consideration and assessment. How does the WATI AT assessment process fit with the quality indicators?

Advanced Activities

  1. The WATI Student Information Guide

Review the WATI Student Information Guide with a specific student in mind and determine which sections you would need to complete in order to move forward with an AT assessment.

  2. AT Assessment Procedures

Review the AT assessment procedures in your school district and determine what changes, if any, you would make based on the information in this module. (If you do not work in a school district, create a suggested set of procedures that any district might be able to use.)
