Reflection Questions

The Reflection Questions document can be downloaded at any time and used in a variety of ways. You can view it before starting your work so that you know which questions will be asked in the videos and/or on the webpages. You can also access it at the end of your work so that you can see all your responses to the questions. This tool can be helpful for documenting your learning and referring to later or for sharing it with others in group discussions or as demonstration of your online progress.

Discussion Questions

The Discussion Questions provided below can supplement and extend your individual learning and be used by facilitators or coaches to prompt meaningful discussions.

  1. How is your school currently handling AT assessment and implementation? Has this been successful or are you seeking to improve your process? Answers will vary but may include a discussion of the following:

    • Persons responsible for AT assessment in your district (e.g., a team, individual, or the IEP team)
    • Current and needed district policies and procedures to support the AT consideration and assessment process
    • Implementation plans developed and available to all team members responsible for implementation
    • Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the district's AT assessment and implementation processes
  2. A fourth-grade student with cerebral palsy is struggling with handwriting tasks.  How might you or your team go about addressing these needs?

During the IEP meeting under special factors and consideration of AT, the team may discover that the OT is able to address the AT needs for writing or perhaps the team discovers that they do not have anyone on the team with sufficient knowledge of AT and, therefore, decides to make a referral for an AT assessment. The case manager follows up with the WATI Referral/Question Identification Guide, thereby initiating the evaluation process. If the school does not have staff designated to assist with AT assessment, the case manager may contact and/or contract with an AT consultant. Staff assigned to AT assessment would then proceed with information gathering using the WATI Student Information Guide distributed to team members working with the student. A team meeting would be scheduled and guided by the WATI Decision-Making Guide.

  3. What are some environmental considerations that should be addressed when considering computer access for a student?

Answers may vary but may include:

    • Location of power supplies
    • Computer operating systems
    • Laptop vs. desktop computers
    • Access methods
    • Transportation of AT from school to home
    • Sound/headphone requirements
    • Printing/scanning needs

Activities on this page are provided at both the introductory and advanced level and can be copied and used within existing professional development or university coursework.
