How is your agency currently handling AAC assessments for adults with DD?

Introductory Activities
-
AAC Funding
In the Supplementary Materials, a list of companies that produce a wide assortment of communication technology is provided. Many of these manufacturers also provide valuable information about funding options. Visit at least three of these sites and review the information.
- How do they differ?
- Is there one site that you found more useful than another and why?
-
An AAC User Shares his Story
Watch the video "How Far We've Come, How Far We've Got to Go: Tales from the Trenches" that is listed in the Supplementary Materials section of this module.
- What was your biggest take-away from listening to Michael Williams?
- During the speech, how did he use his communication device and skills to share his personality and sense of humor?
- Michael is an AAC pioneer. What communication tools and strategies did he use during the different phases of his life?
Advanced Activities
-
AAC Assessment Tool
Many AAC assessment tools and protocols for people with significant delays in communication and cognitive skills are designed for people who are school-age or younger. These assessment tools are often also valuable for adults with DD and complex communication needs, but may need adaptations in their interpretation. Visit the Communication Matrix website and learn about this free assessment tool which helps teams to understand the unique needs of individuals at the early stages of communicating. To the best of your ability, complete the protocol based on an adult with emerging communication skills you may know or are familiar with. How does the adult you are thinking of present themselves as an early communicator differently than the videos and examples given for young children?
-
The AAC Experience
This activity is designed to give you a little taste of the AAC experience. Choose several hours during a day and commit to being a non-speaking person during that time. Pick one or two hours during a time that you normally interact at home or in the community with family, friends, and/or acquaintances. It could be a Sunday afternoon at home gardening and enjoying a barbeque with your family, at your child's soccer game, bowling with your buddies, or shopping with friends. In preparing for this experience, think about how you are going to get your messages across. What can you do to augment your communication now that speech is gone?
After the experience, describe the situation and then reflect on the experience by considering these questions:
- How did you communicate? What AAC tools and strategies did you use?
- What messages did you communicate?
- Who were your communication partners?
- How did your communication partners react?
- Did you get all your messages across successfully?
- Did you communicate everything that you wanted to say?
- What would have made the situation easier?
- How did you feel?
